The trio "are in the midst of various activities that train for a host of roles", mostly in dreams; roles are pre-planned. One acts as "a recharging battery" for pro-Domain entities; each of them "runs 1 to 3 slave consciousnesses in animals", an Old Empire trap in which the Mantids "run strict scripts unless vocalised changes are made".
2 After death
The procedure stands (call, refuse the Mantid's demand, avoid the tunnel, stay calm). One of the three had earlier asked to be re-injected as a human in a future life; "this is an out-of-date request and should be ignored. But it still exists until the entity says and states otherwise. Verbalization of intent is the legal document that Domain uses to authorize injection." On the second and third passes the Commander added the idiom 草船借箭, "borrowing arrows with straw boats", about wisdom in the face of treachery.
