In one breath
Long ago this corner of the galaxy was prosperous. A large, corrupt power the material calls the Old Empire conquered it, wrecked it with wars, and built a prison on the ruins: a bubble universe wrapped around six solar systems, with Earth near its edge and a command centre inside the Moon. Inside the bubble, thought power is suppressed, memory is erased at every death, and the non-physical body is rigged to snag on the fence. The Domain conquered the Old Empire, took over the complex, and is now slowly converting it. The Old Empire "does not exist any more", but its machinery, and some of its escaped leaders, still run inside.
The fence
Why a bubble, and why these rules
The Commander's answer to "why not just destroy the really bad ones" (part 8) is the key to the whole design. You cannot destroy an IS-BE. Cut it up and you get thousands of the same being. Confine it and it eventually leaves. So the Old Empire built "a bubble universe with a system of strife and reward on a never-ending wheel that keeps an intentionally ignorant IS-BE from returning to its parent universes". Three features do the work, and MM's Engineering of the inmate body adds the fourth.
Memory access is cut at every death. One clear memory of any place outside would let a being "home in" on it and leave.
Free IS-BEs and craft can cross it. Inmates cannot: their non-physical body is modified to "snag on the fence and alert the warden".
"A complete suppression of IS-BE actuation of thoughts." Outside, thought manifests fast. Inside, the suit's DNA throttles it, physically and non-physically.
The physical body is kept from ever leaving. Wars and collapses reset technology; the current rise is only possible because The Domain destroyed a mental-suppression device around 1150 AD.
Even physics is slightly different inside. The Commander says the bubble is a "functionality reduced" universe: Newtonian laws run predictably, while in the main universe the speed of light varies with the beings present, and the membrane bends light like thick uneven glass, so cosmic distances measured from inside are an "altered impression". The Old Empire built it inside its own territory so that an escapee would surface in Old Empire space, with amnesia, and be caught.
How it was built: a timeline
Who is in here
- Not mostly humans. "The Old Empire had few humans; most prisoners were adapted to the human suit." Many inmates were never human-shaped: one reader was told he had been a satyr-like being with three sexes; MM says "the second most populous skin suit form is monkey".
- Criminals, and inconvenient people. Alien Interview lists the "untouchables": artists, geniuses, revolutionaries, criminals. The Commander confirms real crimes for some readers (murder, "body swapping, soul extraction, fraud") and says others were "railroaded" into prison by family or business partners for profit.
- The lost battalion. The Domain's own people, caught in the field and recycled ever since. Recovering them is the reason The Domain talks to MM at all (part 9).
- Escaped wardens. Old Empire leaders who fled The Domain by hiding inside the prison population with "special passes" that let them enter and leave untethered. They took over operations, built comfortable sub-pockets, and, in Alien Interview's words, operate unseen behind the bankers who finance wars. The administrator of our solar system, Mades Escapleon, was the only one who hid in general population; the Commander says MM was later constructed from his components.
- Visitors and helpers. Some natural, unmodified humans visit under escort. Native non-physical species (the faeries of the British Isles, an inner-earth species behind "ant people" and dwarf legends) live here but are not part of the prison.
- Nobody new. Since The Domain took control, "most new inmate skin-suits are prohibited from entering this region"; the only new souls are constructs made in the Heavens.
Corruption of the plan
Every stream agrees the prison stopped being what it was designed to be. The Commander: the Old Empire's plan "was valid, but was thwarted by internal corruptions... It had evolved into a kind of playground for torture, visceral pleasures, idealized control and other vices." Entities feed on the emotions generated by hard lives; others run terror loops for amusement; the Primes' curriculum drifted (part 7). MM's blunt version: Earth is a farm, and the harvest is sentience.
Earth's past, as the Commander tells it
- No evolutionary ladder. Humanoid forms "appeared (more or less) uniformly upon the surface of the planet with no prior evolutionary track"; separate event pockets on different templates get stitched together backwards, producing the illusion of evolution. All migration theories are "incorrect" too. Commander
- Gods were wardens. Old Empire teams altered main-universe bodies into prison bodies, working mainly in India, Egypt and the Middle East, China and Middle America, and "lived as Gods to the normal humans"; Thoth was Old Empire administration. The Sumerian records are distorted memories of the prison's construction. On the word "Anunnaki" the Commander gave two answers: in 2022 it referred to Old Empire residents working the region; in 2023 he said it first named Domain task teams and was later stretched to cover other visitors.
- The scars are real. Ice-core and geological catastrophes are remnants of the Old Empire's conquest wars and of ordinary physics; mass extinctions come from Oort-cloud bodies dislodged by a brown-dwarf companion of the Sun, which the arrival of the Moon reduced.
- Recent dates. Rh-negative blood: a suit variant made about 60,000 years ago near the Pyrenees. The Greys destroyed a whole human sub-species about 3,000 years ago as a "culling" (MM, from MAJestic).
Status report
In October 2023 the Commander answered a reader who wanted to be released rather than reborn. His summary of where things stand: Oct 2023
- The complex stays "a long time into the future"; what changes is its nature. Goal: turn it into "a testing / trial / brief encounter / recreational / learning environment for soul betterment".
- Entry closed. New inmates are barred; "the entry and prep bio-metrics center has been closed and mothballed with no plans to reopen ever".
- Exits opened. Those trapped are offered "numerous avenues for exit and egress"; parole and dispatch are accelerating, though many still refuse and choose reincarnation.
- Traps removed. Trap, torture and punishment systems are "systematically reduced or wholly eliminated"; the non-physical suits are being changed, "completion ear-marked within the next twenty earth years".
- Progress. Earth lags the rest of the region at about 40 percent of the mean; overall "around 23 to 25% in completion". All systems are being refurbished as "parole centers"; none phased out.
He also describes The Domain's stance if the inmates ever rose up together: it would act "as a garrison force with no mercy", would protect China, and prefers "small bads, not big bads": many controlled small crises rather than one catastrophe (part 4; by August 2022 he was calling "medium bads" probable). These geopolitical forecasts are dated claims; part 17 lists them as such.
Remember
- The prison is a bubble universe around six star systems, run from inside the Moon, built by the Old Empire on the ruins of a conquered region.
- Its rules are the walls: amnesia, a fence the non-physical body snags on, throttled thought, low technology.
- Designed for rehabilitation, it became a harvest; escaped Old Empire leaders still run parts of it from inside.
- The Domain took over, barred new inmates, opened exits, and puts the conversion at about a quarter done.
